Draft Waikato Regional Economic Development Strategy

What we’re asking about

Waikato can contribute more to increasing economic productivity for New Zealand.

Developed by Waikato Regional Council on behalf of the region with input from various parties, the draft regional economic development strategy identifies six interconnected opportunities that build on the region’s existing strengths to drive the next phase of economic growth. At its core, the approach is about leveraging what Waikato already does well – for the benefit of both the region and New Zealand.

The strategy is designed to be a living document, with a focus on short-term, practical initiatives supported by committed contributions from across the region. It establishes shared priorities, alongside clear economic outcomes and actions needed to achieve success.

Waikato Regional Council’s role in this is to be an enabler, supporting connections, alignment and momentum across partners to unlock growth opportunities.

What we will use the information for

Feedback provided by iwi Māori and stakeholders will be used to refine the strategy, ahead of its adoption by Waikato Regional Council and other parties.

When you can provide feedback

Consultation is open until 4pm on 4 June 2026. We encourage stakeholders to review the draft strategy and share their feedback to help shape Waikato’s economic future.
